    Light Scattering and Gloss of an Experimental Quartz-filled Composite

    For samples of polymethylmethacrylate with and without quartz filler, the inverse of the contrast-gloss ratio is shown to be related to surface roughness and to the optical scattering coefficient. This finding adds to the importance of optical scattering, which has been widely studied because of its relation to color and translucency of materials. Furthermore, optical scattering by composite fillers is shown to be linearly related to the concentration of the filler material within the range of concentrations studied. Quartz fillers were incorporated at concentrations from 5 to 20 weight percent and were short fibers or granular powder, with the granular particles ranging in median equivalent spherical diameter from 15 to 3.3 μm.     Root trait variability in Coffea canephora genotypes and its relation to plant height and crop yield

    Co ee breeding based on root traits is important to identify productive genotypes under adverse environmental conditions. This study assessed the diversity of root traits in Co ea canephora and its correlation with plant height and crop yield. Undisturbed soil samples were collected down to 60 cm from 43 co ee genotypes, in which one of them was propagated by seed and all others by stem cutting. The roots were washed, scanned, and processed to quantify root length density, root volume, root superficial area, and root diameter. Additionally, plant height and crop yield were also assessed. Root length density ranged from 40 to 1411 mm cm3, root volume from 6 to 443 mm3 cm3, root superficial area from 61 to 1880 mm2 cm3, and root diameter from 0.6 to 1.1 mm. Roots were concentrated in the topsoil (0–20 cm) for most genotypes. In deeper depths (30–60 cm), root length density, root volume, and root superficial area were higher in genotypes 14, 25, 31, and 32. Positive correlations were found between root traits and both plant height and crop yield.     Non-Coexistence of Infinite Clusters in Two-Dimensional Dependent Site Percolation

    This paper presents three results on dependent site percolation on the square lattice. First, there exists no positively associated probability measure on {0,1}^{Z^2} with the following properties: a) a single infinite 0cluster exists almost surely, b) at most one infinite 1*cluster exists almost surely, c) some probabilities regarding 1*clusters are bounded away from zero. Second, we show that coexistence of an infinite 1*cluster and an infinite 0cluster is almost surely impossible when the underlying probability measure is ergodic with respect to translations, positively associated, and satisfies the finite energy condition. The third result analyses the typical structure of infinite clusters of both types in the absence of positive association. Namely, under a slightly sharpened finite energy condition, the existence of infinitely many disjoint infinite self-avoiding 1*paths follows from the existence of an infinite 1*cluster.     El uso de la maricultura como sitio de reproducción: reproducción de Hypleurochilus fissicornis (Actinopterygii: Blenniidae)

    Mariculture in estuaries provides substrate for colonization by fouling organisms, thus attracting small cryptic fish species hitherto unknown in this environment. The blenny Hypleurochilus fissicornis is one of the species that is associated with this new system and is found in high abundance in bivalve farming. To understand the reproductive strategy that this species uses in this new environment, we collected specimens monthly in a mariculture on the southern coast of Paraná State (Brazil). After obtaining morphometric data, we removed gonads to determine sex and maturity stage. Gonads were weighed and analysed histologically. Oogenesis showed the same pattern as in other teleosts, but spermatogenesis showed a very complex dynamics. The spawning is multiple and synchronous between sexes, lasting eight months (May to December) and peaking in winter. Hypleurochilus fissicornis was reproductively successful using the mariculture as a breeding site. The species has a variety of tactics to protect its offspring (e.g. batch spawning, long reproductive period, reduced L50, parental care and a reproductive peak in winter).La práctica de la maricultura en estuarios porporciona el sustrato necesario para la colonización de organismos incrustantes, los cuales atraen a pequeños peces crípticos desconocidos hasta la fecha en este ambiente. El blénido Hypleurochilus fissicornis es una de las especies asociadas a estos nuevos sistemas, encontrándose en elevada abundancia junto al cultivo de bivalvos. Con el objeto de entender la estrategia reproductiva que esta especie usa en su nuevo ambiente, se muestrearon mensualmente especímenes en una instalación de maricultura en la costa sur del estado de Paraná (Brazil). Después de obtener los datos morfométricos, las gónadas fueron extraídas para determinar el sexo y el estado de madurez. Las gónadas fueron pesadas y analizadas histológicamente. La ovogénesis presentó el mismo patrón que otros teleosteos, mientras que la espermatogénesis presentó una dinámica compleja. La puesta es múltiple y sincrónica entre sexos, extendiéndose durante ocho meses (de mayo a diciembre), con un pico de puesta en invierno. Hypleurochilus fissicornis tuvo una reproducción exitosa empleando las instalaciones de maricultura como zona de cría. Dicha especie presentó una variedad de tácticas para proteger su descendencia (p.ej. desove en lotes, largos periodos de reproducción, L50 reducida, cuidado parental y pico de puesta invernal)

    Transfer Matrices and Partition-Function Zeros for Antiferromagnetic Potts Models. V. Further Results for the Square-Lattice Chromatic Polynomial

    We derive some new structural results for the transfer matrix of square-lattice Potts models with free and cylindrical boundary conditions. In particular, we obtain explicit closed-form expressions for the dominant (at large |q|) diagonal entry in the transfer matrix, for arbitrary widths m, as the solution of a special one-dimensional polymer model. We also obtain the large-q expansion of the bulk and surface (resp. corner) free energies for the zero-temperature antiferromagnet (= chromatic polynomial) through order q^{-47} (resp. q^{-46}). Finally, we compute chromatic roots for strips of widths 9 <= m <= 12 with free boundary conditions and locate roughly the limiting curves.Comment: 111 pages (LaTeX2e).     Critical Exponents, Hyperscaling and Universal Amplitude Ratios for Two- and Three-Dimensional Self-Avoiding Walks

    We make a high-precision Monte Carlo study of two- and three-dimensional self-avoiding walks (SAWs) of length up to 80000 steps, using the pivot algorithm and the Karp-Luby algorithm. We study the critical exponents ν\nu and 2Δ4γ2\Delta_4 -\gamma as well as several universal amplitude ratios; in particular, we make an extremely sensitive test of the hyperscaling relation dν=2Δ4γd\nu = 2\Delta_4 -\gamma. In two dimensions, we confirm the predicted exponent ν=3/4\nu = 3/4 and the hyperscaling relation; we estimate the universal ratios  / =0.14026±0.00007\ / \ = 0.14026 \pm 0.00007,  / =0.43961±0.00034\ / \ = 0.43961 \pm 0.00034 and Ψ=0.66296±0.00043\Psi^* = 0.66296 \pm 0.00043 (68\% confidence limits). In three dimensions, we estimate ν=0.5877±0.0006\nu = 0.5877 \pm 0.0006 with a correction-to-scaling exponent Δ1=0.56±0.03\Delta_1 = 0.56 \pm 0.03 (subjective 68\% confidence limits). This value for ν\nu agrees excellently with the field-theoretic renormalization-group prediction, but there is some discrepancy for Δ1\Delta_1. Earlier Monte Carlo estimates of ν\nu, which were  ⁣0.592\approx\! 0.592, are now seen to be biased by corrections to scaling. We estimate the universal ratios  / =0.1599±0.0002\ / \ = 0.1599 \pm 0.0002 and Ψ=0.2471±0.0003\Psi^* = 0.2471 \pm 0.0003; since Ψ>0\Psi^* > 0, hyperscaling holds. The approach to Ψ\Psi^* is from above, contrary to the prediction of the two-parameter renormalization-group theory.     Therapeutic ultrasound as a potential male contraceptive: power, frequency and temperature required to deplete rat testes of meiotic cells and epididymides of sperm determined using a commercially available system

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Studies published in the 1970s by Mostafa S. Fahim and colleagues showed that a short treatment with ultrasound caused the depletion of germ cells and infertility. The goal of the current study was to determine if a commercially available therapeutic ultrasound generator and transducer could be used as the basis for a male contraceptive.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Sprague-Dawley rats were anesthetized and their testes were treated with 1 MHz or 3 MHz ultrasound while varying power, duration and temperature of treatment.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We found that 3 MHz ultrasound delivered with 2.2 Watt per square cm power for fifteen minutes was necessary to deplete spermatocytes and spermatids from the testis and that this treatment significantly reduced epididymal sperm reserves. 3 MHz ultrasound treatment reduced total epididymal sperm count 10-fold lower than the wet-heat control and decreased motile sperm counts 1,000-fold lower than wet-heat alone. The current treatment regimen provided nominally more energy to the treatment chamber than Fahim's originally reported conditions of 1 MHz ultrasound delivered at 1 Watt per square cm for ten minutes. However, the true spatial average intensity, effective radiating area and power output of the transducers used by Fahim were not reported, making a direct comparison impossible. We found that germ cell depletion was most uniform and effective when we rotated the therapeutic transducer to mitigate non-uniformity of the beam field. The lowest sperm count was achieved when the coupling medium (3% saline) was held at 37 degrees C and two consecutive 15-minute treatments of 3 MHz ultrasound at 2.2 Watt per square cm were separated by 2 days.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The non-invasive nature of ultrasound and its efficacy in reducing sperm count make therapeutic ultrasound a promising candidate for a male contraceptive. However, further studies must be conducted to confirm its efficacy in providing a contraceptive effect, to test the result of repeated use, to verify that the contraceptive effect is reversible and to demonstrate that there are no detrimental, long-term effects from using ultrasound as a method of male contraception.</p
